Description
This rare and exquisite comb is attributed to Ferdinand Zerrenner, a leading jewelry manufacturer from the small Southwestern town of Pforzheim, Germany. It is crafted in 900 silver with green and yellow plique a jour enamel work accenting the sensuous lines and foliate theme typical of the Art Nouveau Era. The silver piece is attached, by way of four square silver capped screws, to the original celluloid comb, hand etched with "F. SERRENNER". The back of the silver is stamped with the Zerrenner's makers mark and 900, which is the silver standard for Germany. The complete piece measures 5 inches high, 4 1/2 inches wide and 1/4 of an inch thick. It is in very good condition.
Zerrenner was a large and successful producer of well-made and fashionable jewels, at times accused of imitating French ideas, which they accomplished with great skill and verve. They participated in the 1900 Paris International Exhibition. An example of this work is on permanent display in the Schmuck museum Pforzheim, the only museum in the world devoted to the history of jewelry.
